Recommended Hardware Specs Released For Windows Home Server

Mon, Feb 12, 2007 | Terry Walsh

Further to my blog over the weekend on building your own Home Server, the Windows Home Server team have now released the recommended hardware specs for running Beta 2.

CPU: 1GHz Pentium 3 or better
RAM: 512MB minimum
Hard Drive:1 Hard Drive 80GB internal (IDE, ATA, SATA, or SCSI)
DVD drive that is bootable
Monitor for the installation
QWERTY Keyboard and mouse or a compatible pointing device. Also installation only.
Network Interface Card (NIC) 100Mbps Ethernet

They do make the point however that multiple hard drives are preferred, for use with file duplication settings - this mirrors your files across multiple drives to ensure a backup is safe in the event of a drive failure.

Will Home Server install on “lower” hardware? I have a Dual 600Mhz PIII server that is currently running W2K3 but I like all the functionality that Home server includes so I wanted to try it out before I go and buy new harware.

I was able to get it running on a PIII 800 Mhz system.

I got it running on a Celeron 2ghz seems to be ok
