As I’ve mentioned previously, we’re moving house in a few months time, and will be knocking the house around a little which gives ample opportunity to design my home network properly - this time (I think) using a combination of wireless and ethernet. THe positioning of my home server and router is going to be an essential part of the mix - the new house’s telephone socket is downstairs, so I’ll either have to hide the router away in a cupboard downstairs, or run a cable to it.
My Home Server is currently tucked away in the den, but I’d like to completely hide it away in a cupboard, or maybe the garage. Where have you placed your home server? Any cabling hints and tips?

I originally had my server (running naslite) in my loft but it kept shutting down due to the heat in the loft space in the summer. My server (currently running server 2003) resides in my garage (nice and cool) and sits on top of the beer fridge. I have two gigabit switches either end of the house with my router in the upstairs office uplinked. Only thing I use wireless for is my laptop so I can sit in the garden.

My Home Server is in the workroom. The workroom is next to living room. The Server, my desktop and the Media Center PC have a 100 MBit Ethernet Link. The Laptop using the network wireless or sometimes over a Ethernet Link.
The Home Server ROCKZ!!!

Mine is currently located in my bonus room along with a few other PCs and most of my networking gear. WHS is installed on a Dell 600sc server which is loud and generates a lot of heat so I’m planning on relocating it and its UPS to my unfinished basement where the noise and heat won’t be an issue. My basement is a dusty place so I’ll probably put the machine in a PC “Dirt Bag” to help keep the dust out of it. I considered building some kind of enclosure to keep the system clean, but seems like a much cheaper and easier solution (assuming it actually works). Dirt Bag info: http://www.dirtbag.biz/

My WHS box is on the desk in the “office” in the basement. It was mainly used for the desktop computer. Now that everyone has their own laptops the room is almost never used. The server sits there next to the router. It is also nearly silent (Dell Inspirion E521) so if someone is using the old desktop which is really loud it is not even noticed.

I have a storage box at the front of our house for wellie boots, buggies etc. I ran power and network to that, and the server sits in there

My HP 475 is on a counter in the back of my office/bonus room. It sits there in the corner on the HP 400 UPS. I don’t hear it or notice it. I have 5 PC’s being backed up and have all my music, photos, and videos streamed from it. Very nice piece of hardware and great features in WHS!
