It’s looking pretty certain from this post that the first (and who knows, possibly only) Release Candidate for Windows Home Server will be released at some point next week!
Release Candidates are considered to have the potential for release, unless any major bugs appear.
Various websites are reporting on an email sent to beta testers stating that there will be no upgrade path from the current CTP build of WHS to the new RC. That means everyone will have to perform a “clean install” - ie, allowing your WHS machine’s hard drive to be formatted, and the new build installed.
This practice is pretty common when beta testing - installing “beta over beta” is generally not an accepted upgrade path on most MS betas I’ve been on, as it can introduce problems at a later date.
For those on the public beta, submitting bugs via Connect has now been switched off, and you’re invited to migrate over to the WHS Forums with all bugs and queries.
So, my weekend will be spent ensuring I have everything important on my home server backed up, and then preparing the machine for RC1 next week. Let’s hope it’s a great build!
