Integrating Windows Home Server with Windows Media Center

Thu, Aug 16, 2007 | Terry Walsh

Many of you will be using your Windows Home Server as a digital media hub, in conjunction with home computers, or networked media devices around the house. I have a Netgear Digital Entertainer now safely installed under the TV in my lounge which, after a little bit of playing around with Guest permissions on WHS, is proving to be a great solution for playing music, video and photos from my home server.

As a long-time Windows Media Center beta tester, there was a period of about 2 years where I had a Microsoft-supplied Media Center computer sitting next to the TV, and WMC can do just a good a job of acting as a media display device should you so wish, especially as in the past year or so, PC form factors have reduced significantly, so you can fit a PC neatly under the TV, and not feel like you have a small hovercraft whirring away in the room with you (like the Dell’s I was using on the beta!).

Ian Dixon covers integrating Windows Home Server with Windows Media Center on his latest Media Center Show Podcast.

This week Microsoft MVP Richard Miller joins me to explain how to integrate Windows Home Server with Windows Media Center. We talk about how to use Windows Home Server to store and share Recorded TV and recap on some of the features of Windows Home Server.

So, if you’re looking into exploiting an existing Media Center computer in your home, or want to find out a little more about the benefits of a WHS/WMC partnership, Ian’s podcast is a great place to start.

In the meantime, I’m still sitting tight waiting for the Media Center team to get moving on their next beta - there’s a lot of catching up to do!
