Fujitsu-Siemens Scaleo Home Server - Photos and More Details

Wed, Aug 29, 2007 | Terry Walsh

Hot off the press, we now have photography and more details on Fujitsu-Siemens’ Scaleo Home Server, which will be announced formally at IFA in Berlin later this week.

Firstly, let’s take a look at it!
Fujistu-Siemens Scaleo Home Server

The unit’s looking a lot more polished than the prototype render we revealed a couple of months ago, with the colours reversed to a black case with silver mesh. The system also looks like it comes with a stand so it can be displayed horizontally or vertically, for easy storage out of sight (but as it looks this good, you may want it on display!)

OK, on to the spec - this is preliminary at this point:

  • 4 internal hard drive bays
  • Four USB 2.0 ports
  • 2 e-SATA ports
  • Flexible placement: horizontal and vertical positions
  • Low power consumption
  • Always available through Fujitsu Siemens Computers Advanced Power Management (instead of Always on)
  • Very silent operation
  • Pricing and availability will be announced at IFA in Berlin later this week.

With this, the HP MediaSmart Server and Tranquil’s Harmony Home Server, it looks like the WHS Hardware race is hotting up!

Low power consumption and 4 internal hard drive bays - sounds good!!

Any news of the size of the device?

    2. Terry Walsh Says:

Not yet - hopefully later in the week.

why have the power button on the front? Hp’s in on the back of the unit as well as harmony’s(at least it looks that way). I would hate to have a kid turn it off cause they think they have to, like in our house PC’s not being used are turned off to conserve energy, so loose that power button on the front and all is well.

Terry!!! You were faster then me again! ;-)
I’ve just posted the article for the Q&A session.

    5. Terry Walsh Says:

Ha ha - I type fast Christoph :-) Big thanks for the shout out to Germany on the Q&A.

      “Very silent” operation?

      1. Silent is a superlative. You can’t have ‘very’ silent. It’s either silent, or it’s not. When will marketers stop abusing the language so?

      2. This is blatantly a lie. Even if the unit is fanless, I have yet to hear (or not hear) a silent hard drive. The unit may be very quiet, but it will not be silent.

Pardon me while I tut loudly for a few minutes.

    7. Terry Walsh Says:

      :-)

Well, given this is coming from Germany, you have to cut Fujitsu-Siemens at least a *little* bit of slack as I’m sure they’ve translated this from German.

But go right ahead and tut - I’m a big fan of language too! :-)

    8. Shawn Says:

Well, some hard drives ARE quieter than others, plus there could be sound dampening material on the inside of the case.

Also, just because it says “hard drive bays” doesn’t mean it has to hold hard drives. What about solid state drives? I know that SSDs don’t make any sound and it would of course be quicker than hard drives if hooked up to gigabit LAN.

    9. Dave Says:

If you click on the picture to see the bigger version, you can clearly see 2 USB ports right next to the power button. That should give you an idea of how big this thing is.

    10. Soxx Says:

Umm, Dont Companies Consider HEAT? something thats “Always On” so small, fanless… that thing is gonna get damn hot in some counties.

    11. Terry Walsh Says:

Well, at this point, we don’t know it’s fanless…. also check out the unit is quoted as “Always available” rather than “Always On” - my take out from this is that they’ve done some work on the power management to reduce consumption whilst the unit isn’t being accessed - not sure what “Fujitsu Siemens Computers Advanced Power Management” is right now, but it seems to be a selling point. We’ll know more in the next few days.

Looks promising, more so then the HP with those e-sata, now all we need is prices and availability.

    13. g3n3tix Says:

About the size : it looks quite big, look @ the usb ports under the power button…

    14. Terry Walsh Says:

Just had some more photos of it on show at IFA which I’ll post up tonight. It’s definitely bigger than it initially looks, but then it’s pretty expandable too….

Keep an eye on the site later.
