Share your ideas at MS Connect

In August, Kevin Beares, the Community Lead for Windows Home Server was seeking ideas for an appropriate communication channel for users to share their feedback, thoughts and ideas for future releases of Windows Home Server.

Having collated opinions from the community, the Windows Home Server have opened up a feedback channel at Microsoft Connect through which any Windows Home Server user can share their ideas, and other users can add their opinions and vote for their favourites.

So, if you have any burning issues with WHS v1 or a set of kick-ass ideas for v2, then get over to Connect and tell the team!

I’d like to see a real, operable print server. The work arounds that have been offered are just that as none is easy to use, or a hassel to install and a pain to use.

Here is my 2cents worth in no particular order… Keeping in mind I am thinking os WHS as a server and not a toy…

    1. Ability to set OS partition size manually
    2. Better website templates, both public and private, family calendars both public and private.
    3. More options for user / file security such as subfolders
    4. Ability to set User Folder Maximum size limits ie: Kid1 has max size of 2GB, Adult1 has unlimited, Adult2 has 200GB Max and so on.
    5. Better Console UI
    6. Data Corruption Errors Fixed
    7. Better performance.
    8. Ability to set duplication / balancing to a schedule
    9. Public / personal forums, message boards, guestbook.
    10. Website statistics including pretty charts : )

All of these I would love to see, but number 4 and 7/8 are the most important. For those of us wanting to move our PVR / Media Servers (BeyondTV, Sage, MediaPortal etc) to WHS number 8 is probably the most important to enhance performance. And since this is to be a server possibly for some users a type of built in proxy with filters, access hours and website blocking would be nice. Some site forums have a mail server request and although this would be a nice feature for some, I think the complexities and security issue’s that could bring forth take it beyond the home server concept of ease of use and could threaten many home servers, so I would not submit that myself, that said a “mail server lite” where the service could log into popular pop3 or webmails (yahoo, MSN, live, hotmail, google etc) and bring this down might be snazzy as they have already performed most of the security on their servers.
