Win a Copy of Diskeeper 2008 HomeServer (by saying hello!)

Diskeeper 2008

Update: The competition is now closed! Thanks to everyone that entered - we had a massive (and in parts massively funny) response from you all. You rock!

As you know, Diskeeper 2008 HomeServer was released this week and the very nice people at Diskeeper Corp have agreed to hand over a free copy of the software (retails at $69.99) to one very lucky WGS reader. Diskeeper is the only hard-disk defragmentation software that plugs right into your WHS Console - I’ve been running a previous version for a while, and love it.

To be in with a shout, as usual just add a comment to this post and say hello - and if you like, add an interesting fact, and it’ll give me the chance to learn something when I pick the winner. The winner will be drawn at random, though! (No points for great facts, sorry!)

And whilst I’m here, just a reminder that subscribing to email updates from WGS is a great way to keep up to date with what’s going on in the world of Windows Home Server [</advert>] :-)

Right, get greeting!

    Hi there!

I’ve been running WHS (beta, now OEM) for a while now on a custom box; I’ve been experimenting with it and working on some add-ins, but just yesterday it saved me for real: I had a hard drive failure, but I was easily able to restore the contents from a WHS snapshot. Whew…

    Hello!!

Diskeeper is defragmenting my normal systems with interesting results. Within the last 30 days about 250.000 (!) fragments were eliminated. Being able to (hopefully) monitor the client-defragmentation will be fun using the diskeeper WHS version as a network administration tool.
Imaging how many fragments will be eliminated in future on your Windows Home Server System. I do hope that they have choosen the right variable for the history of fragments ;;) Well.. we will see how this goes on.

The automatic backup is great — but the big selling point with my wife has been remote access. She can get access to her home PC from work and get access to stuff she forgot to bring in during the day. Big plus in the WAF (wife acceptance factor) category!

    Hi Philip,
I am one of the lucky guys selected for beta testing Diskeeper 2008 Home Server. I have my copy already but have a friend who would sure like to get one. He is out of town (in Greece) right now so cannot comment himself.

BTW, Diskeeper 2008 Home Server is a good product. It just works, defraging in the background. No need to worry about WSH resources being hogged either as Diskeeper works. Nice product for some lucky winner.

  86. George Says:

Sorry Terry. Boy is my face red. As you probably realize I got your site mixed up in my mind with Philip Churchill’s. Very sorry to call you Philip although Philip is a great guy too. I really like your web site as well as Philip’s. Both you guys do a great job. My face is still red but maybe I got a little of the egg off my face! :)

Hello and greetings from New Zealand. An enthusiastic user of WHS here. Count me in for the draw.

  89. Simon Mackay Says:

    Hi everyone!

Windows Home Server, as a “System Builder” distribution, would be valuable as a tool for putting a relatively-recent “doorstop” (old unused computer) to work as a basic file server for a home network.

    With regards,

    Simon Mackay

  90. WindowsObserver Says:

Wow - 85 hopefuls - shame they logged their comments so early in the process :-)

  92. Erik Hess Says:

    Hello! :)

While moving cross-country, my WHS box (which has been running WHS since Beta 1, housing my media/photos with ease) has been in hibernation. Having a fresh copy of Diskeeper to keep things running smoothly would rock! :D

Wow.. What a lot of people have entered already.
Interesting fact: You can use carbonite home backup on WHS so long as you only have one drive. Add a second drive and folder duplication kicks in, carbonite no long is able to access the files.

I run ten drives in my WHS (2.57 TB) and between load balancing, backups, and disk checks my disk activity light rarely stays off for long. So far the system is rock solid and it gives me a real piece of mind backing up six systems in the house. I could really give Diskeeper a REAL workout.

  126. SidSwiftsteel Says:

    Hello…

    Cheese Biscuits taste good.

  127. Jorge Says:

    Hello!
Got my WHS running two days ago. A few glitches so far, but nothing I can’t deal with.

Tip: If you setup your own OEM on an old PC, make sure to change the BIOS setting that makes the system halt on all errors to HALT ON NO ERRORS. This is needed if you unplug the keyboard from the WHS, since the WHS will need to reboot from time to time due to automated updates. If you have the default setting and reboot, the PC will just sit there on POST waiting for a keyboard signal.

I am still struggling with the correct power saving settings because the WHS becomes unavailable in the middle of the night when I am trying to copy all my videos to it. You would think that the fact that files are still being written to the hard drive would let the server know that it is NOT ok to go to sleep.

  128. Richard Dodsworth Says:

I’ve been using WHS for 6 months now,, great stuff !!

  161. Rich Says:

Got the WHS OEM version, put on a barebones AMD 4600+, slapped in 2-500Gb SATA3, 2Gb DDR2 RAM, backed up a Vista Ultimate PC, my biz XP Pro laptop and a MCE 2005 machine, setup my Live domain, remote access, loaded my music, photos, etc. in 2 days!!! Only real work was manually setting up port forwarding and setting a static IP for the remote access, but that was a snap too.

Diskeeper would be great if it improves performance…I’d love to give it a try.

Oh yeah, HELLO Terry! What a great site!
