The next in the semi-regular series of planned updates for Windows Home Server will be available to download via Windows Update on Tuesday November 27th.
There are a few fixes in the forthcoming update, the most visible being a resolution to a long outstanding problem with Windows Home Server throughout the Beta and RTM releases - the Remote Website Certificate problem.
Many of you will have experienced this problem when trying to access your home server remotely. A few months ago, Microsoft revelaed that a fix was in progress, and the November update will include an SSL certificate provided by GoDaddy for every home server user which will prevent this issue from occuring in the future.
The November update also fixes a misleading router configuration message which appears if the router’s UPnP settings are disabled, and corrects a few minor issues in the product:
- A Delete All command button has been added to the Backup tab on the Windows Home Server Console Settings page. You can use this command to permanently delete all home computer backups that are stored on the home server.
- Files on the computer may not be successfully backed up if the latest successful backup is marked as “deletion.”
- Data files that contain NTFS alternate data streams may be corrupted on a Windows Home Server computer.
- You may receive an inconsistent notification when a hard disk that is installed in or connected to a Windows Home Server computer fails.
- Windows Home Server Drive Extender may not update read-only attributes from the master shadow to the alternate shadow. Therefore, Microsoft Money backup files may not be successfully stored in Windows Home Server shared folders.
This is a “must have” update, so make sure you check Windows Update next week.

I’m surprised you consider file corruption (’Data files that contain NTFS alternate data streams may be corrupted on a Windows Home Server computer’) a ‘minor issue’.
I find it astonishing that Windows Home Server was released at all while this problem remained unresolved.

Actually, you’re right - it’s not a minor issue. I haven’t experienced the problem myself, but the ADS issue isn’t minor. I’ll correct the article.

Any idea if the SSL certificates will work for those with their own domains, or only if you are using a subdomain of homeserver.com?

I bought a domain with TZO (The process was not very smooth, nor free for 1 year, nor $9.99 per year) and I am getting this SSL cert error. Too bad we can’t use windows live custom domains, or can we?? Will godaddy be issuing certs for these TZO domains?

I just set up my new HP WHS and set-up a TZO domain. I can access remotely, but get the SSL cert error. I keep reading about the November update, but I can’t figure out how to determine is I’ve got the update - I should have it - auto updates is on -. I accessed the MSFT site and they sent me a “hotfix”, but I’m not sure I should install that.
