Travelling Once Again…

Sun, Dec 2, 2007 | Terry Walsh

I’m just packing as from tomorrow, I’ll once again be off on my travels - hopefully for the last time this year. This time, it’s destination South Korea with a little stay on the way back in Tokyo. It’s my first time to both countries, so I’m looking forward to seeing them.

If you have any tips for things to do in Tokyo or Seoul, post them below!

So, as usual, expect light posting for a week or so….

I’ve lived in Japan for two years, and I think that you will enjoy it. Most of the signs at the train and subway stations (the major way to travel) have English/Romanji (japanese words written in roman letters). It rains a fair amount this time of year, so don’t forget a rain coat. But also take some time to visit some local sites (e.g. temples, castles and the like). The people are all very nice, and the do bow a lot. You will find your self doing so if you spend more than a week. Cash is preferred over credit cards, and some places (not including hotels) might not take cards, although this may have changed over the last few years. Have fun. Ganbate kudasai.

If you make it down to Kunsan (Gunsan), Korea, drop me a line. I’ve been here for four years this time. But over thirty years total time in the Land of the Morning Calm. I’m sure we can find something to do besides talk computers! I’ll send contact info by the contact link.

Funnily enough, I was scheduled to do a few days in South Africa over the summer, but was double booked. Wather’s nice in Tokyo right now - a lot warmer than London!

You should head West to the mountains of Nagano! Then you will know cold my friend! We had a bit of snow here yesterday. But you’re right Tokyo is nice and warm.
Actually set up my WHS last week. Had a devil of a time getting the Port Forwarding to work properly!
Will probably post an entry to portforward.com if they accept guides in foreign! ;-)
The language wasn’t a problem, but for some reason NTT’s router did not like me meddling with its settings. I spoke to a very helpful lady at NTT and she said “Your ports are already open you muppet, stop fiddling!” Or words to that effect in a nice and polite manner! Turned out I just needed to switch off UPnP before forwarding them manually. I know I know RTFM. But since NTT is the largest provider in Japan I think they can expect quite a few phone calls from new WHS owners as the auto UPnP function doesn’t want to play with their routers…Maybe you can give them a little advice! Good luck there!
You might want to check out Akihabara (electric town) for all things electric, but leave your credit cards at home!

Have fun, and drink as much Asahi Super Dry as you can!
