CES 2008: HP Media Vault mv2100 and mv5100 Announced

HP Media Vault

Either someone’s just got busy with a saw, or HP just announced the HP Media Vault mv2100 and Media Vault Pro mv5100.

Not so interesting for us as it’s a Linux-based NAS device, (and hopefully we’ve already got our backup covered, thanks very much,) but it looks like a mini MediaSmart Server which is pretty fun. As with the EX470 & 475 you get HP Photo Webshare and iTunes Server on board, as well as a Marvell processor and PacketVideo for media streaming.

The devices can back up weekly, daily or continuously as required, and as with the MediaSmart Server, you can add in an extra drive which will provide Raid 1 protection.

If you’re thinking of getting rid of your home server (don’t do it! :)) the entry-level mv2100 comes with a 500Gb hard drive, and the mv5100 rocks up with 1 Tb or 1.5 Tb plus 2Gb of off-site storage.

I reckon you’re best off sticking with WHS actually :)

How about one of these without Linux and only a eSATA controllers for adding in more eSATA drives to our MediaSmart Server! Who needs a penquin hanging around when you have stay-at-home-server :-)
