Windows Home Server Power Pack 1 brings a number of enhancements and fixes to the WHS Connector.

• The Windows Home Server Connector can now be installed on home computers running Windows Vista x64.
• Functionality is added to detect that the version of the Windows Home Server Connector software is aligned with the version of Windows Home Server software.
• The Connector setup infrastructure has been revamped to support upgrade and servicing.

Whilst some of these features can be classed as “Under the Hood”, you will notice a few differences when you install the new WHS Connector on a home computer. Let’s take a look at some screenshots.

Step 1: Downloading Latest Version of the WHS Connector

Before installing the WHS Console on a home computer, the WHS Connector will check your home server to ensure it’s the most up to date version. If it isn’t, the latest version of the Connector will automatically be downloaded from the home server to your home computer.

Step 2: Agree to the PP1 EULA

As you can see, we’re currently running a Release Candidate version of the software (which so far, has been really stable).

Step 3: The WHS Connector Installs

Step 4: Enter Your Home Server Password

Step 5: Configure Automatic Connector Updates

Here you can configure WHS to download and install Connector updates automatically on your home computers on an ongoing basis, or go for a manual updates if you prefer.

Step 6: Configure Home Computer Wake Up

Here you can configure Windows Home Server to wake up your home computer if it’s in Sleep or Hibernation Mode, to enable it to be backed up. Take note, it may not go back to sleep following the backup, so you may wish to set youir backup timings a little later in the night. The short help file explains more.

Step 7: The Home Computer is Configured

Step 8: WHS Connector Installation Complete

To finish off, you’re presented with a summary of the options you selected.

And that completes the installation of the WHS Connector in Windows Home Server Power Pack 1.
