Backing Up Windows Home Server With Power Pack 1

One of the new features included in PP1 is the ability to backup your shares on your WHS.  I would have liked to show you how to do this, but I do not have any extra hard drives at the moment to show you.  Or make use of!

But the next best thing is pointing you in the right direction to show you how to do it.  So without further ado, head on over to Paul Thurrott’s SuperSite for Windows and check it out.

Now, if some vendor would just have a “buy one, get two” sale on 1TB drives, I’d be very happy!

Hello. I’m from the heartland of U.S. Lots of corn and beans, although Iowa is a lot more than just farmland. It also has a few computer enthusiasts (no, not me!). I’ve been around PC’s since I got my 1st PC XT aloooong time ago. WGS is one of the first sites I found centered around WHS. And the best. Every once in awhile, I do get away from the KB and enjoy time with and my wife and our 4 kids. And I do have a day job.

I still don’t understand why this can’t be scheduled. I have a 250GB USB drive hooked up for this feature, but what good is it if I have to remember to run the backups manually? The idea is that if the house is on fire, I can grab the usb off the desk and run with it. The good it does if the backed up data on it is 3 weeks out of date.

this feature is really disappointing in its implementation.
No protection of the data (which means i am less confortable leaving a backup at work just in case of fire/flooding/etc…).
Also the shared folder backups should share the same cluster based technology as the client PC backup to conserve space.

The backup process can be automated easily with Scheduled Tasks, and it does use Single Instance Storage, so only backs up any changes to subsequent copies

I agree this should be scheduled.

Also I’m getting the old ‘pathname too long’ error on backup - PP1 seems to have fixed it for shared folder duplication but the new feature hasn’t caught up.

I disagree with Yves about using the client PV backup technology - the point about shared folders is they are stored as just the standard files (if scattered about a bit) so if total disaster strikes (and you have folder duplication turned on) you can just hitch the disk to any old PC and get what you want back again.
