Windows Home Server Bible, by Greg and Jennifer Ackerman Kettell is now in stock and shipping at Amazon.

The book, published by Wiley, runs to 600 pages and covers a wide and very detailed range of Windows Home Server related topics, including installing and configuring your home server, streaming media to a variety of network devices as well as running and programming add-ins - here’s a description:

Transform digital chaos into a well-organized home network

When was the last time you backed up your home computer? If your household is a hodge-podge of unconnected laptops, desktops, and printers, it’s time to bring order and peace of mind by creating your own secure home network with Windows Home Server (WHS) and this comprehensive guide. From protecting your data against hardware failures to organizing all of your family’s digital media onto one central hub, this practical reference covers all the techniques and step-by-step instruction you need to succeed.

Choose the out-of-the-box WHS solution or repurpose a spare PC

Go wired or wireless, run Ethernet cable, and configure a router

Walk through installation and get up to speed on the WHS Console

Establish user accounts, set up shared folders, and create a print server

Schedule backups for PCs or Macs and recover from crashes

Build a media hub and stream to computers, Xboxes, and PlayStations

Monitor your home remotely with a webcam

Excerpts of the book are available <a href="http://media.wiley.com/product_data/excerpt/6X/04702295/047022956X.pdf"target="_blank" onclick="javascript:urchinTracker ('/outbound/article/media.wiley.com');">here, <a href="http://media.wiley.com/product_data/excerpt/6X/04702295/047022956X-1.pdf"target="_blank" onclick="javascript:urchinTracker ('/outbound/article/media.wiley.com');">here and <a href="http://media.wiley.com/product_data/excerpt/6X/04702295/047022956X-2.pdf"target="_blank" onclick="javascript:urchinTracker ('/outbound/article/media.wiley.com');">here.
When I was told by Todd Headrick from the WHS Team, that they were planning on releasing “Mommy, Why Is There A Server In The House?” on Amazon for people to buy, I have to admit, I thought he was joking - sure, releasing the rumour around the Net would be a neat extension to the “Stay at Home Server” campaign, but publishing the book for real? Come on!

How wrong I was….! Amazon.com now have the book listed for pre-order. It’s currently out of stock, but fingers crossed it arrives soon and you can get your copy too before they sell out!
Anyway, the book is a faux parental guidance title used to explain the purpose of Windows Home Server, and is great fun. I have a copy to give away to WGS readers. As ever, just answer this challenging question, and the book is yours.

Question: Why IS there a home server is your house?

Winner will be pulled out at random on 17th Jan 2008.

Update: The competition is now closed. Thanks to everyone who entered!

So, work continues on building the site further - this morning I’ve opened up a new section of We Got Served, WHS Books, which will list and track all books published that are relevant to Windows Home Server - I was surprised to see just how many there were already, with more to be published in January and February. I’ll keep this list updated as often as possible, but I always need help with people spotting new titles that are being published, so get in touch if you hear of any.

I’d also like to cover books that aren’t necessarily focused on Windows Home Server, but will help users in the development of their digital home - it could be about devices, wiring, home networking etc. I’ve added a couple of starters, but would love to hear about the essential books and manuals that have helped you develop your own home network. Feel free to leave your comments below.

In the meantime, check out <a href="http://www.wegotserved.co.uk/whs-books/"target="_blank" >WHS Books.
